Why You Need An Email List
I remember when I first started my creative business. I spent a lot of time writing blog posts, creating pretty graphics for social media, and then posting those blog posts and graphics on social media to gain readership.
Back then, I didn't have a newsletter or an email list to write to. I didn't think I needed one. I believed that my people were on social media and that if they enjoyed what I was posting (by the hit of that pretty little red heart or by leaving a comment) that they'd get over to my blog, read more of what I was writing about and continue to become more engaged with my business.
But, after a while, I started wanting to create a more personal connection with my audience. And I knew from my own experience how easy it was to get lost in the depths of a social media scroll and mindlessly hitting that heart without truly engaging.
So when I asked myself "how can I speak to the people who truly want to hear from me, make these conversations more personal, more 1 on 1 and more intentional?"
I knew the answer was an email list. Here's why.
It's 2019 and we're receiving more emails than ever. Some stats I've read have said that the average person in 2018 received an average of about 90 emails a day. 90 EMAILS. Holy inbox!
With that being said, if someone is deliberately signing up for your email list and asking for yet another email to land in their inbox - they really want to hear from you and want what you're offering.
Those are the exact kind of people that you want to talk to!
It's like the friend that we all know is so busy but she still makes time for your monthly coffee dates. You know she's super invested in your friendship because she continues to carve out time for you.
On social media, you have a lot working against you and your content getting to your core people. Between algorithms, competitors and so much more - sometimes it can feel like your post is a needle in a huge haystack.
Sometimes you may even wonder - am I reaching the right people with this post? How do I know if it's a mindless like or that they actually enjoy what I'm talking about?
With an email list, you're speaking to an audience that has invited you in and writing intentional and meaningful content that they have asked for. These are your people.
They will engage with your content.
They will reply to your emails.
They will visit your blog.
They will download your free and helpful resources.
They will want to hire you or buy your products.
While you know I am a social media nerd as well, I believe that your time, energy and best content is better used for your email list and in your newsletter.
In future posts, I'll share with you how to build an email list, what offerings you can provide in exchange for someone signing up for your list and what you should and should not write about to your list. And so much more.
