Our 12 Favorite Baby Items So Far
Wow - you guys are amazing! I received such amazing comments and feedback regarding Oliver’s birth story and I’m just blown away. Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story and for giving Ollie such a warm welcome!
I posted on social media asking if a post about our favorite baby items so far would be of interest to any of you. So many of you said that you would love a post like this and so I decided to create it. I know that this is something I was looking for when I was pregnant.
There are so many products out there on the market and most of them are saying you MUST buy them. Me and Albert are quickly finding out that that’s not necessarily the case. Most of the time we’ve realized that it’s actually better to wait to buy something until your bundle of joy is at home and you can figure out what you really need or want.
There are a few things that we bought just knowing we’d love them and use them right away - only for Ollie to not be such a big fan of it. And newsflash, he basically runs this household now so if he doesn’t like it there’s no reason to force him into it.
Okay, without any more delay - here’s a list of our favorite things!
P.S. - full disclosure, most of the links below are affiliate links. This means if you choose to purchase something through the link below, I’ll get a small percentage back. Regardless, these items below are ones we’ve purchased with our own money and our opinions are our own. Whether you purchase through the link below or somewhere else - we still highly recommend these products.
This wasn’t our first stroller choice but the other one we chose was sold out everywhere. Literally everywhere. So we had to go with our second option - which turned out to be amazing! We love this stroller. It is so easy to collapse and expand for in & out of the car. And I love the bottom compartment because it fits our diaper bag perfectly. The car seat is a bit on the heavier side but we’ve been leaving that in our car and just carry little guy to & from the destination most times.
This is the ultimate diaper bag - we have it in black. It has so many compartments that I’ve forgotten I’ve put things in there already. I absolutely love it. There is no way you won’t find room for everything you need. Plus, we’ve used the changing pad as a way to give Ollie a bath by the sink until he could be submerged in water. I can’t say enough good things about this diaper bag.
This changing table organizer is a pure dream! At first when I told Albert I was putting this on our registry, he wasn’t sure it was entirely necessary. But, now that we’re in the thick of the newborn stage and 3am feedings, we’re really happy we have this. Now, could you store your diapers & wipes in the nearest bathroom or on some shelf in your room or the nursery? Absolutely. But, why not have it directly attached to where you’ll be needing these items the most? So happy we have this!
This swing is so cool! Not only does it have the little mobile above and different rocking/swinging settings by the touch of a knob - it also plays music! You can hook your phone up to the swing and turn on Spotify or iTunes and play whatever music will swing baby to sleep or accompany his play time. Also, confession: we’ve used this swing also when Ollie wouldn’t sleep in his crib. It has lap buckles so that no matter his swinging level, he’s secure in the swing.
We live in a one bedroom apartment and so we weren’t sure if we’d have room for another trash can. We thought about just putting all the trash together in our main trash can but THANK GOODNESS we didn’t. Uh, with the amount of diapers we go through we’d be taking the trash out every 5 seconds. And let’s not even TALK about what the smell would be like with some of the blowouts Ollie has had. The diaper genie is small & compact and Ollie is 3 weeks now and we’ve emptied it maybe twice? Yeah, buy this.
I love these baby wipes! I got a few different kinds at my baby shower but I really like these the best. Mostly because they ingredients are super simple - 99% water with a touch of fruit extract. These are gentle enough for me to feel comfortable using them on his whole body.
Truthfully, I haven’t tried any other diapers but these. I love them mostly because they have a strip indicator that changes from yellow to blue to let you know when the diaper is dirty. This has helped us so many times when he’s been fussy - we don’t have to completely take the diaper off to know. It’s either yellow or blue so it makes it super easy on us especially in the late nights/early mornings.
If you plan to breastfeed then I highly recommend you getting a Boppy pillow - or, some sort of nursing pillow. This helps so much to position Ollie the right away and saves me from my back arching over him to get his latch just right. I have two of them (one for the bedroom and one for the living room) but you could get away with just one. Honestly though, I’ll probably get a third to keep in the car for when we travel to my parents or a friends house.
I seriously don’t know how the nurses at the hospital do it with the blanket swaddles. But, I gave up mastering that technique super early - maybe I’ll get back to soon. Thankfully, these sleepsack swaddles have completely saved us. They are super easy to use and you don’t have to master your burrito rolling techniques with a flailing arms & legs newborn. Save yourself and have a few of these on hand.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the DockATot by now - if not, and you’re a new mom or expecting mom - buy one. I’ve heard from different moms that they use this item in various ways. Some use it to help their newborn or infant co-sleep in those first few weeks home from the hospital. (Right, not all newborns come home and immediately sleep on their backs in their cribs like most people say to do)
Some use it as an activity center because you can accessories that have hanging toys on them. And the list goes on. We’ve used it for a mixture of both. This is nice for me to have nearby so I know he’s okay when I’m throwing in laundry or grabbing a cup of coffee. And yes, we’ve used this (and currently still use this) to help him sleep better in the crib. The choice is yours but, you’ll most likely want one on hand.
This isn’t necessarily something you can buy but still a product/service I highly recommend. I did my baby registry through Babylist and I loved it. Rather than having multiple baby registries at different stores, you can combine items from multiple stores under one central list. So, I had items from Amazon, Target, Pottery Barn, BuyBuyBaby, etc. all on one list from Babylist. They make it super simple to set up too!
When we first brought Oliver home and began having the sleepless nights that everyone warns you about - we thought it was just par for the course. It wasn’t until I had had it with being up until 4am - yes, being awake until 4am trying to get this little guy to go to sleep - did I know that something had to change. I was crying daily and was beyond tired that it was really hard to function clearly each day. I came across TakingCaraBabies and their newborn class on Instagram. After reading the reviews, it sounded like it could help - hell, sure couldn’t HURT!
Um…best purchase ever. Literally the only way I’m able to write this blog post right now is because I used the techniques that Cara teaches on putting newborns down to sleep - for naps & at bedtime. Today is actually Day 3 of me implementing these techniques and they work. I learned things in her class that I hadn’t heard from anyone else in any of the birthing or baby classes I took.
If you’re struggling with your little one’s sleepy time - I highly recommend taking the newborn class!
Whew - there you go, our favorite items so far! We’re only 1 month into being new parents and loving on Ollie so I’m sure we’ll come across more favorites as time goes on. But, these are items I’d recommend having on hand when your little one comes home or shortly thereafter. They’ve certainly helped us and I really hope they help you!
