Growing up we had certain nights for different foods. Tuesdays and Fridays were always seafood focused. Which, I never did because I'm still coming around to eating fish. Sundays were always a big home cooked meal. Maybe a whole roasted chicken, a big pasta or even steak if we got fancy with it.
Even now, I ask my Mom "what's for dinner?" And she'll say, it's Saturday. Which means, it's burger night. Or I can go home unannounced on a Sunday and pretty much know that there will be fresh bread & end with dessert after dinner.
It's weird how some of those things growing up still stick with me even though I'm away from home. Sometimes, when we didn't want burgers or we had already had them a different day of the week, we'd substitute them out for sloppy joes or tacos.
Who loves sloppy joes? Do you put cheese on yours? If you're not concerned about dairy, PUH-LEASE put cheese on that sloppy joe & thank me later. It wasn't until I was in college did I realize that not everyone put cheese on a sloppy joe. That's crazy! Do it.
Also, I was always so excited for tacos. I never get sick of tacos. Ever. Breakfast tacos, lunch tacos, dinner tacos, dessert tacos. I've never met a taco that I didn't like. Believe it or not, this is one of the very few ways I'll eat fish. Fish tacos are delish!
A few weeks ago I was heading to my parent's house to hang out and eat dinner. Of course, it was taco night! Sweet enough, my Mom asked if I had any candida related requests. I called her right away and had her read me the ingredients of the salsa, taco sauce & the packaged taco seasoning we always bought.
Salsa was clear! But the sauce & seasoning were not. But my mom said, "I bet we can make our own." And I'm always up for a challenge. I mean, how hard could it be?! But we wanted it to taste exactly like the packaged stuff we had been used to for years.
After a few taste tests, we are here! No matter if you're whipping up quesadillas, tacos, or nachos, this seasoning will go perfectly with your choice of meat. I prefer my tacos & stuff with beef but chicken, seafood or even tofu I'm sure would be amazing.
Make it per meal or double the batch and seal it in a jar for anytime you need it.
Homemade Taco Seasoning
- 1tbsp chili powder
- 1tbsp ground cumin
- 1tsp. salt & pepper
- 1/2tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
- Mix together
- Store in sealed container for 2-3 weeks
